Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born within Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise in her early years. She was a night nurse so that she could give her aunt the time she needed during the day to indulge in writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay discovered through her example that art was a vehicle for activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of her social status and taught that she could express her thoughts by using the arts. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and raised. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights marches that were historic across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay was able to use the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and obtained degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the trash of one of members of the juries. The jury member was unhappy with her journalism tasks and decided to move into the business of public relations. DuVernay was brought in right after college, as the junior publicist for a small studio. In 1999, she launched her own firm of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency also established a range of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
